Dan Shaughnessy is a sports columnist and associate editor at the Boston Globe. He grew up in Groton, Massachusetts, graduated from Holy Cross in 1975, and worked part-time at the Globe from 1973-77. He covered the Baltimore Orioles for the Baltimore Evening Sun and the Washington Star from 1977-81. He re-joined the Globe fulltime in 1981 and has been a sports columnist since 1989. He has been named Massachusetts Sportswriter of the Year 14 times and 15 times has been voted one of America's top ten sports columnists by Associated Press Sports Editors. He is in the National Sports Media Association's Hall of Fame and in 2016 was recipient of the BBWAA Career Excellence Award presented annually at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. In 2026 he was awarded the APSE's Red Smith Award, the top career award in American Sports Journalism.

Dan has written 13 books, including New York Times bestseller "Francona,'' "The Curse of the Bambino,'' and "Wish It Lasted Forever - Life With the Larry Bird Celtics.'' He holds honorary doctorates from Southern New Hampshire University and Nichols College. He is married to Dr. Marilou Shaughnessy and has lived in Newton for 46 years.
